    this is not just a…

    brandstorybehind the scenes

every box we send out says the same four words on the lid. this is not just a box. it's easy to skim past. that's kind of the point.

the phrase started almost as a joke. dan was writing label copy for the first lip balm and got tired of every skincare brand promising their product would change your life. so he wrote the opposite version first, just to clear his head. this is not a miracle. it's beeswax, shea, and cocoa butter in a tube. that line never made it onto the label. the instinct behind it stayed.

“this is not just a…” ended up everywhere — the box, the insert card, the captions online. it's not a slogan we picked because it sounded clever. it's a discipline. every time we're tempted to oversell something, the phrase forces the honest version out instead. this is not just a lip balm — it's four ingredients you could read out loud in one breath. this is not just a box — it's three things made in small batches, not fifty things made to fill shelf space.

most skincare brands grow by adding. a new scent, a new size, a new active ingredient, a new claim. we've gone the other way. three products. ingredients you can pronounce. nothing added because a trend showed up. that's not a marketing angle, it's a constraint we build into every decision. if an ingredient can't earn its place, it doesn't go in the jar.

the “this is not” framing is really a promise about what we won't do. we won't tell you a hand cream is going to transform your skin overnight. we won't hide behind a word like “natural” without explaining what's actually in the bottle. we won't pad a box with filler to make it feel bigger. every “this is not” is a boundary, and the boundaries are the brand.

it's a strange way to build a business — leading with what something isn't. but it's honest, and honest things take longer to explain and less time to trust. once you've read the label and know exactly what's in your lip balm, the whole idea stops sounding clever and starts sounding obvious. of course it's not a miracle. it's beeswax.

if you want to see what “this is not” looks like in practice, the set is the easiest way in — three products, made the same way every time, nothing in there we can't explain. try it and find out for yourself.
