why your skin feels different in fall

    skincarefallmoisturizing

every september it happens the same way. you're fine all summer — a little lotion here and there and you're done. then the first cold week hits, the heat comes on, and your hands feel like paper by wednesday.

nothing is wrong with your skin. the weather changed. here's what's actually going on, and what to do about it.

the air is pulling water out of you

fall air holds a lot less moisture than summer air. then you go indoors, where the heating dries the air out even more. your skin sits between the two, and water leaves it constantly — this is called transepidermal water loss, and it goes way up the moment temperatures drop.

that's why your hands crack first: you wash them more than any other part of you, and every wash strips a little more of the natural oils that hold water in.

your summer routine isn't failing — it's underpowered

the light lotion that worked in july was working with the humidity, not against it. once the air turns dry, skin needs two things: water, and something on top to keep it there.

that's the whole idea behind how our products are built:

    • not just a hand lotion is lighter — good for daytime, right after washing, when you want moisture that doesn't sit on your hands.
    • not just a body butter is the heavy layer — shea and cocoa butter that seal everything in. best after a shower or before bed, or any time your hands get really dry.
    • not just a lip balm — lips have no oil glands at all, so they're the first thing fall attacks. keep one within reach from october onward.

    three habits that actually help

you don't need a ten-step routine. three things cover it:

    • lotion on damp skin. right after a shower or washing your hands, while skin is still damp — that's when it holds the most water.
    • body butter at night. skin repairs itself while you sleep, and the thicker layer gives it hours to work without losing water to the air.
    • lukewarm, not hot. hot water feels great in october and strips your skin barrier in the process. turn it down a notch.

    and the ingredients?

nothing in our products changes with the seasons — shea butter, cocoa butter, beeswax, olive oil. the same short list all year, made by hand in small batches, minimally preserved with Geogard ECT. what changes is how much you need it.

if your skin is asking for more this month, you can find all three products — or the set, all three together in the gift box — any time on the shop page.
